From the Other Side
Midnight Angel
McGuire was a big man On the Alabama shore When he got to drinkin' Well, he only wanted more And at the bottom of a bottle He found his loaded gun And headed back to Mobile To put a man on the run The Ballad of Big Bill McGuire Now, Samuel was a good man He never meant nobody harm But you never cross ole Big Bill With his sister on your arm McGuire grabbed his pistol It was a silver .32 And he shot a man in cold blood Just to settle the dispute The Ballad of Big Bill McGuire Big Bill went a runnin' Right into the sheriff's arms A confession for some brandy But he don't seem too alarmed Sent to die in prison For the blood on his hands Oh, but Big Bill kept a grinnin' Poor Sam never stood a chance With only one regret Before they sentenced him to life "I wished I shot 'em five times "Instead of only twice" The Ballad of Big Bill McGuire
I know I'm not the first to love her She won't be the last to let me down In the morning when it's over I'll be finding my way out of town Ain't no use in me hangin' 'round I've done all I can Every minute of every day of every week standing by her side My broken heart in my hand But in the morning when it's over She'll be begging for another dance Now, baby, you were blind to see just how good it was But by the time you came around, I made it on my own because I am not the first to love you You won't be the last to let me down In the morning, when it's over, I'll be headed for another town
When Love Comes Home

Taking cues from Southern Rocker predecessors, both past and present, Georgia native Hughes Taylor carries the torch with his own mix of blues and rock through his live shows and records, electrifying and soulful. Along with his band and other session players, they gathered in various studios, both physical and remote, with himself donning the producer’s hat to get the songs on tape along with Carl Jah of Dread Zepplin fame. The album was mixed at Capricorn Studios by Rob Evans (Chuck Leavell, Blackberry Smoke) and mastered by Chris Griffin at Griffin Mastering (drivn n cryin); Dark Roast May 17, 2024, on CPI Distribution.
This is Hughes’s fifth release, and he’s been busting at the chops to get this one out. The songs on Dark Roast are filled with greasy guitar riffs, thundering drums, a solid bassline, and Taylor’s expressive voice on top. A voice will recall Jonny Lang and Marcus King. Taylor wears his guitar influences out and proud: Stevie Ray Vaughan, David Gilmour, and Steve Gaines.

Today an accomplished guitar player with a voice that is bigger than he is, Hughes has developed his signature style: a fiery brand of blues-rock whose lineage stretches back to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Cream.
